Intro

Tom will be presenting some short pieces that he has written, and invites anyone interested to read and comment. Tom Foti believes that all the problems in our society and in our world only present us with opportunities to mine our creative potential, and to find new ways for all of humanity to grow in a spirit of good will and understanding. Tom welcomes like-minded individuals to connect and communicate, and pool our intellectual, artistic and spiritual efforts toward the common goal of creating a greater good for all. Check out a sample of my work.

The Door

by Tom Foti

There’s a door waiting. It’s closed, but unlocked. It stands in full view to each of us; stalwartly supported by its hinges, quietly blending into the background of the wall. It’s there through the duration of each of our lives. It goes practically unnoticed by most. Some see it occasionally and pass it off as merely part of the scenery. Others glance at it, and wonder at times. What is it doing there? Why is it never opened? Life seems to go on at quite a regular pace without the intervention of whatever it is that exists on the other side. Is it worth even being concerned about?

Soon the questions cease. The day resumes; the eyes travel back to the business at hand. The thoughts once again turn to the events and schemes that occupy mostly all our time. And still the door stays where it is. Closed; waiting. It doesn’t attempt to lure you in, and it doesn’t demand anything of a person. But it does compel you, in a starkly subdued way. You somehow suspect that – if only because of its presence as a mystery – there may be something worth seeing on the other side.

And you may find yourself being drawn close to it. And by the very same action, you suddenly also find that you’re slightly removed from everything else. And soon you begin to wonder, with an intensifying degree of intrigue, what exactly it is that has begun to command your attention so completely.

You come right up to it. And for a split second, your mind dares to consider opening it. But as you begin to raise your arm, you suddenly become terrified. You quickly draw your hand back, and stand there, inches away from the door that still waits. And in the midst of a quiet tremor, an understanding becomes clear.

There is a decision. To make it, is to go through.

You look back slightly, and for a second consider the life that you’ve been leading, and all that you have known. And with a nod, and a moment’s closing of the eyes, you take it all in. You feel it; all that you have been and all that you are. It seeps into your being in a swift, consuming entirety.

And then, as a steel beam girds your spine, you come to realize that what you’re leaving behind, is what you’re taking with you.

Once again, with eyes open wide, you face the door. With everything inside of you, you raise your hand, steadily, and place it on the knob. A deep breath…

And turn.
